LEGO – 90 Years of Play
90 Years of Play!
The humble LEGO brick.
Arguably one of the most well-known toys in the world, LEGO sets have become part of the magic of childhood.
In 1932, Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen began making toys in his small workshop. As a man very skilled at his craft, he made it his mission to pursue high quality craftmanship in his work. He created the name LEGO for his company, from the Danish words ‘leg godt’, which means ‘play well’. The name was officially used from January 1936.
In 1949, Kristiansen saw the potential of plastic bricks, and goes on to launch the ‘Automatic Binding Brick’, which in 1953 was renamed to the LEGO brick, and the name was moulded onto every piece. The brand went on to become a worldwide success, and was named Toy of the Century in 2000.
Now collaborating with some of the biggest brands like Disney, Harry Potter, Star Wars and more, as well as two feature films in 2014 and 2019, LEGO has come a long way from that small workshop in Denmark.
This year celebrating 90 years, LEGO has come a long way. It’s just a matter of getting the imagination going – and letting a wealth of creative ideas emerge through play.
