  1. Equipment

There’s a lot to take in when it comes to fishing equipment. From rods to reels to bait and lures, choosing the right equipment is important, and sometimes overwhelming. Key considerations to think about are;

  • Where will you be fishing? Ocean, river, lake?
  • From what platform will you be fishing? The beach, rocks? Maybe on the jetty or on a boat?
  • What type of fish are you trying to catch?

By being able to answer these questions, you’ll be able to get a better idea of what equipment will be best suited to you.

Once you know where you’re going and what to expect from the water and the fish,

  1. Plan Your Trip

Know what you’ll be getting into! If the forecast calls for rough weather like strong winds, you’ll probably be unlucky with catching anything, and you probably won’t exactly have a relaxing time either.

Do some research into the fishing area you’re planning to visit. What species are in the area, and are they the ones you’re after? This is important in order to establish whether you have the right equipment as well as whether you will be visiting the right location.

What time of day will you be going? Both early in the morning and late at night are the best times for fishing, as fish are most active at these times. Make sure to take this into consideration when planning your trip and go at a time that works best for you!

  1. What To Take

When you’re in a rush to leave, you will inevitably forget something. Our top tip is to pack as much as you can the night before or as early before you go!

Even if you’ve chosen a relatively cooler day with more cloud cover, sunscreen is always an essential, as well as sunglasses. Those pesky UV rays can still get through and you don’t want to come home with a sunburn!

Make sure to pack plenty of water and snacks to keep you fed and hydrated throughout the day. Not only important to keep your energy levels up, you’ll be alert and have sharper focus and reaction times for when that fish bites.

Importantly, don’t forget your patience! Patience is essential when it comes to fishing. It can take a long time to catch something, and sometimes you’ll go home with nothing at all. However, time out outdoors is always time well spent!

  1. Safety

Always put safety first when fishing, there’s a lot that can go wrong! Make sure you’re always aware of the weather, the tides and swell conditions, as these things can change very quickly. Wear light coloured clothing and sturdy footwear, and make sure you’re dressed for the elements. Never go fishing alone, and make sure someone knows of your whereabouts and when you intend to return.

Most of all, have fun and good luck!
