The 70’s Are Back!

70’s homewares are experiencing a renaissance right now!

Flower power wall art, brightly coloured glass, and unapologetic colour have all made their way back into the homes of today’s most knowledgeable interior decorators, and it looks like they’re here to stay for a while!

70’s style was a free-for-all, there were no rules when it came to décor, and the home could look and be all kinds of fun. So far, house plants and an injection of bright autumnal colours like orange have been the majority of 70’s inspiration for home décor so far, but slowly and surely it is being welcomed back.

For some, the textures, shapes and colours are what is so attractive about 70’s homewares. Others love the ability to inject personality into their homes in ways that today’s modern and more minimalistic trends just don’t allow. While today’s clean lines and muted colour palettes are chic and sleek, bold use of colour has a certain charm. With the use of brighter bolder colours, we are embracing the energy and positivity we need in a post-pandemic era.

Another trend from the 1970’s that is slowly making its way back to modern interiors is low lighting. Tied in with pandemic induced desire for cosiness in the home, warmer toned low lights make a room look more cosy and inviting and add a touch of nostalgia.

While we may not be reintroducing the crazy patterns of the 70s, the gorgeous earthy tones can be incorporated nicely into the home to add a pop of colour and style that can easily be switched out. The key to keeping the look of your home fresh and modern is to keep a natural colour palette in soft furnishings rather than weighing them down with heavy browns and timbers.

Balance the colours with natural surfaces that add texture and a connection to the outdoors. With earthy tones of mustard, ochres, tans and browns as well as leafy greens and soft oranges, the colours of the 70s embrace all that is natural.

Pops of colour work well in lamps, lighting, art and objects such as glass and pottery, which all play a part in styling a room.

The main objective of the 70’s aesthetic is to embrace colour!  It doesn’t have to be super bright, it could even be an earthier tone. But the presence of a bold saturated colour gives the seventies inspired interior its punchiness.

In the end, it’s all about having fun and seeing what works for your space. Experiment and see what you can do!
