Top tips to buying the perfect bike!

Your child is ready to ride a bike, now what? There are so many skills to learn, although it’s important to not focus on each all at once, as it could quickly become quite overwhelming. Skills, you might ask? We have condensed these into five your child will learn over the course of starting to ride a bike.

  1. Steering
  2. Balance
  3. Pedaling
  4. Braking
  5. Changing gears

If your child is between the age of 1.5 and 4, the safest option is a balance bike. Children between these ages will usually learn one motor skill at a time, therefore mastering balance (which is one of the most important skills when learning to ride a bike) will help them feel more at ease at their own pace, without the added pressure.

A fairly obvious tip when looking into buying a bike is making sure you have the correct height, otherwise your child may possibly quickly lose confidence. It might also mean, if the child does have training wheels, they may rely on training wheels a little longer than necessary. Lowering the seat to lowest is could possibly go is important, so they are able to have flat feet on the ground not on the balls of their feet.

Choose a safe area to learn so you as well as your child are able to have fun whilst learning and not have the added pressure of worrying what may possibly be around the corner. Grassed areas are one of the safest and best options, with smaller slopes so your child is able to practice braking. Grass is a little softer than concrete so a better option to fall onto.

Don’t cause undue stress or anxiety on the child or yourself as the trainer, to get it right too fast. Each child has their own ‘timeline’ to learn a skill or a goal. I’m sure you can remember when you learnt to ride a bike, scary yet so much fun when you got the hang of it!
